Day 9

Praying for Marriages

Scripture

21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Saviour of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 5:21-33

Marriage is hard work because two individuals come together and work at learning each other in the midst of difficult life circumstances. Each one has to grow to overcome selfish tendencies. Today divorce among Christians is at its highest level in history. Interestingly, the wedding business is experiencing a boom as well. According to marketresearch.com, the US wedding industry hit a record high of $72b in 2016 with 300,000 active wedding vendors providing one form of service or the other. For some reason, people are still keen on tying the knot legally despite the risk of separation and divorce. The Biblical position on marriage has not changed even though many governments of the world have changed the definition of marriage. We must remember that Christians have a citizenship in heaven, and as Jesus taught, though we live in this world we are not of this world. May our hearts, like that of the first-century disciples, continually gaze on the truth of God’s revealed word and may we pursue His will no matter what.

Sample Prayer

Lord in heaven, our Creator and Sustainer,

Thank you for the gift of marriage. I pray for every marriage in the local church. I ask for your peace and grace over their relationships. I pray that they will have revelation from you about how You see their marriage. May they first run to You for help and wisdom rather than to third parties. Send those you have appointed to walk alongside them when there are difficulties.

I pray for my own marriage (the single /unmarried can declare this in faith calling those things that be not as though they were) that your perfect will be done. I pray for my spouse that you work in him/her both to will and to do your good pleasure. We shall work in submission to you and to one another. Let love grow in the life of every couple. For those who have lived together and desire to tie the knot under the witness of your church, work in them your will and your counsel. Thank you for the increase in wisdom for those engaged to be married. May all those praying and waiting for a spouse find strength to carry on. Remove loneliness and desperation where it may arise.

Thank You Lord as I ask and receive these things in Jesus name.
