Day 10

Divine Patterns I

In Exodus 25 the Lord called Moses to build Him a place of worship in the wilderness so that the entire congregation of the Children of Israel could have a place to worship Him. They had been delivered from Egypt (saved), but that was not an end in itself. The Lord God wanted more of them in fellowship and worship:

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an offering. From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering. And this is the offering which you shall take from them: gold, silver, and bronze; blue, purple, and scarlet thread, fine linen, and goats’ hair;ram skins dyed red, badger skins, and acacia wood; oil for the light, and spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense; onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ephod and in the breastplate. And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it.40 And see to it that you make them according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.

Exodus 25:1-9, and 40 NKJV

The Divine pattern was intended to build a place that would accommodate the practice of approved rhythms of God for worship. The Church is also being built up into a house of God with Christ as the Head. Our salvation is not an end in itself. We must progress in the light of Christ.

you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:5 NKJV

If you compare Acts 17:2, Luke 4:16, and Luke 22:39 you will find the following words phrase common to all …as his custom was…” The phrase speaks of a pattern or manner of living and a rhythm that eyewitnesses had observed in Jesus and the Apostle Paul. They offered up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by their individual given pattern or custom.

Christ lives in every believer by faith through the Holy Spirit. If that is the case we can safely conclude that He has a pattern to support rhythms for how to build our individual lives to live for Him. What is revealed in Scripture regarding worship, giving, prayer, marriage, loving one another, forgiveness, etc applies to every believer. However, it is also important to note that He has a pattern that is specific to you as an individual. There are also patterns He will reveal to each local assembly. This is why I am specifically called to the city I live in and why my family moved almost two decades ago. It is beautiful that all followers of Jesus Christ are called to worship God following a path individually designed for us.

Your Divine Pattern Or Custom

All of creation follows a perfect rhythm. You are an individual house of God described as the temple of the Holy Spirit. His pattern for you is His design for your life. Do you know any specifics?

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NKJV

The patterns he will show you will lead to rhythms that will enhance your worship. He will reveal to you daily, weekly, monthly, and maybe yearly rhythms. An example for me is that I feel a call around the beginning of fall every year to go away for a week at least. During these times I have felt God’s presence and His reassurance in unmistakable ways. I have daily patterns as well which I ask God for grace to observe. Jesus had a daily pattern we see in Mark 1:35.

One of the benefits of pursuing a deeper walk with God is that He will guide us from the general into His perfect will for each of us. You can call it a custom design built on the general design of God’s will. A peripheral Christian faith leaves much to be desired. Paul writes to the Corinthians some very sound words regarding a deeper walk with Jesus:

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
