Day 7: The Spiritual Work Of Fasting With Prayer

We made it to the last day. Praise the Lord.

Adding fasting to prayer is spiritual work. The first mention of the discipline in the Bible was in Exodus 34:28, where Moses fasted for forty days and forty nights. He entered into the fast upon receiving instructions from the Lord to hew out two tablets of stone and ascend Mount Sinai in order to receive a new set of commandments for the nation of Israel.

“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.”

Just before Jesus began his ministry, He was driven into the wilderness to face a series of temptations from the devil. As we know, He fasted for 40 days and nights.

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry”

We also see examples of individuals and groups fasting throughout the scriptures, showing that the discipline is not limited to spiritual leaders. Hannah, the mother of Prophet Samuel, refused to eat; Anna, a prophetess, served God in the temple through fasting and prayer for decades; and she was a witness during the dedication of the Baby Jesus at the temple. Paul and Barnabas set out after fasting and prayer.

It seemed like fasting was considered part of the spiritual work and walk of followers of God. It didn’t appear optional. There also seems to be a direct correlation between spiritual fasting and spiritual power. We see that Jesus went into the wilderness full of the Spirit, and then, interestingly, the script reports that He returned in the power of the Spirit.

What does fasting with prayer accomplish? Abstinence from food for spiritual reasons is a humbling experience and, in itself, a sacrifice. It is also a sign of submission to God. Here are some things to consider:

  • Humbling our souls: Psalm 35:13
  • Draw close to the Lord in holiness/sanctification: James 4:8
  • Receiving clarity: Isaiah 30:21
  • Hearing the Lord: Acts 13:1-3
  • Better health: Isaiah 58:6-8
  • Establish and strengthen a covenant with the Father: Psalm 50:5
  • A refreshing: Joel 2:25-27
  • Saving lives: Acts 27:21-26, Esther 9:1.
  • Destroying the work of satan: 1 John 3:8
  • Supernatural encounter: Acts 10:9-15

Fasting with prayer is a living sacrifice unto God our Father through Jesus Christ to bring His will to pass in our lives and on the earth. I have always believed that fasting “unfastens” fastened situations and fast forwards miracles. May the year 2026 bring us “fast-forwarded” miracles and the “unfastening” of fastened conditions in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen!

Apostle Paul demonstrates the power of fasting with prayer in an event that could have ended catastrophically with 276 souls perishing in the sea:

But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss. 22 And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23 For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ 25 Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.” Acts 27:21-25 NKJV
